The Photography Place... is a creative working studio, in Bucks Country, Pennsylvania, where photographers share their images, ideas and interests with others also interested in learning photography. It is from our past that we look to share the future and learn by what we teach. We are living in a moment of dramatic change in photography. Enjoy this moment. Charles Callaghan

"If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants." This helps us rise up and see more clearly the directions we have chosen" John of Salisbury

Perceptions of Pennsylvania Project - Selected Images : Over the last year, we have used photographs of amateur athletes to illustrate the determination that is needed by groups organizing to protect their local environments. The imagery has allowed us to show the sense of effort and resolve in a way that no words can really express.

The value of these images in conveying a message of hope and achievement led us to reflect on the immense impact of the Farm Security Administration images taken during the Depression. Given the nature of our current economic conditions, it was only logical that the conversation soon turned to duplicating those efforts, on albeit, a smaller scale. It is from that perspective that the Perceptions of Pennsylvania Project was born.

Originally, it was intended that all of the images to be included would be positive, upbeat, and motivational. However, that isn't reality. The abandoned steel mills are as much a part of our landscape as are the Endless Mountains. The pain of unemployment is as valid an expression of who Pennsylvanians are as is satisfaction on the face of the pole vaulter setting a new record. The goal of the project is to show both what Pennsylvania is and what it can become.

It is intended that Perceptions of Pennsylvania will be an on-going project. Subjects will include the places and people that make Pennsylvania. Some images will be inspiring, some will reflect the beauty of our natural and built world, while some images will be thought provoking. The rich and famous are unlikely candidates for inclusion but the anonymous mechanics, merchants, and workers that really make our lives what they are, will be featured.

Private funding has been secured to cover the printing and display costs of the initial group of photographs and foundation funding has been provided to support the creation of video segments of Pennsylvanians who have fought to preserve their communities. Additional funding will be secured as the project develops.

The images residing temporarily on these pages represent the starting point for the project and as the image base grows, the discernible focus areas that we have identified will become evident. Over the coming months Perceptions of Pennsylvania will find a more permanent own home on its own web page and an exhibition schedule will be announced.

We would like to thank the many people who are supportive of the project and hope that you will return frequently to see new additions to the Perceptions of Pennsylvania Project.

Images of Bucks County : Bucks County Pennsylvania, on the eastern edge of the state, just an hour north of Philadelphia, ranks as a favorite among the tourists and artists and is the home to a diverse gathering of residents. The county seat is Doylestown and perhaps its most famous town is the well known artist colony, New Hope. The Delaware River borders one edge separating it from New Jersey. During the summer month the towns and streets swell with traffic and activity as people come from miles around to visit the land, enjoy its diverse foods, admire its farmlands and stay in the B&Bs. The destination is a favorite short get away for NYC residents, and even boasts of a few brave commuters who travel the 1.5 hours plus to go to and from. The images included here are a growing collection showing the many vistas of life, surrounding The Photography Place which also proudly claims Bucks County as its home. information@thephotographyplace.com
